Research: Music Video Conventions
I will be filming a rap music video for my upcoming music video. In these type of music videos, the context can be about any and everything. It can depend on the rappers' gender, controversies going on, personal life, etc. The beginning of rap videos were usually "gangster" like and were focused life in the projects with the struggle of death and drugs surrounding their environment. The 80's and 90's music videos were really focused on violence and drugs. As the 2000's came in, women started to get into the rap game. Their music videos could be about the loss of a love, new found love, poverty and struggle. The music videos also showed or set trends for the general public. Baggy shorts and clothing, for example, were hugely popular in the early 2000's and were seen a lot in their music videos. Some music videos now actually endorse brands in their music videos. You can see cars being lingered on for extended periods of time. Clothing worn by rappers, like Drake wearing Nike clothing, or Fashion Nova products in Megan The Stallion's videos. Rap music videos also consist of devices that are used to affect the viewers.
- The device Pathos is used a lot in music videos. Rapper would try to connect to a viewer who possibly came from the same background as them. Sometimes the music video can display trauma that the rapper went through and try to have the audience sympathize with them.
- Ethos is also used, the rappers can try to tell a story from their point of view and be the only credible source of an act that occurred. They give so much confidence in their side that it is believable.
