Genre Research: The Breakfast Club

                             Genre Research: The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is an iconic 80’s dramedy film I’ve done research on. With a great cast and plot, the film greatly captures what a dramedy should be. The film found a balance between the combination of genres. In a dramedy, you do not want to have comedy mixed up in the drama and ruin the objective of the movie. A lot of dramedies often tip to one side more than the other but not the Breakfast Club. The film captured the drama involving the characters and comedy antics without drowning one another out. Another element of dramedy is character depth. Without it, audiences can’t connect or sympathize with the characters. The Breakfast Club most efficiently built up the characters backstory adding layers to their character. Eventually realizing their roles as, “a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess and a criminal” Lastly, an element of dramedy in film is the reality. By that I mean the reality of the characters or the situation around them. Filmed in the eighties the characters situation was real, being in detention on a Saturday. There are the teens dealing with abuse at home, suicidal tendencies, kleptomania, bullying, etc. All of which occur at the high school stage, and throughout life also. All these elements impressed me because they were captured so perfectly. Not to mention the pacing of the film was done well also. A classic of a film. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to watch a dramedy. Here’s a movie poster from its original release below.
