Genre Research: Life(1999)
Life is a dramedy film released in 1999. An iconic
cast of black actors and comedians, like Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Bernie
Mac, etc. Dramedies are supposed to balance between drama and comedy, this
movie really went mostly one way. While an extremely funny film, its drama element
was the minority. What the plumbing about two black men being convicted of a
crime that they didn't commit, the movie had potential to be more dramatic. That’s
an element they weren’t so great in with this genre. They did provide character
depth however on the main characters, giving a backstory on them and their personality.
One being a get rich quick type and the other a “get a job” and settle down type. When it comes to reality, there are some elements that are unfortunately true. Two black defendants supposedly on trial to be judged by their peers. Except its the 1930's and their so called peers is an all white jury who already think of them as guilty. There was a time where this occurred a lot in history, even now there's some instances of gross injustice. The movie captured that element perfectly when it comes to realism. Some of the antics that occurred on the other hand weren't exactly real. It was still an enjoyable film, extremely hilarious with is cast. While it did not receive a high score from critics, audiences loved it.
